The Gabriola Chamber would like to introduce you to Melinda Wilde of Our House Art Studio!
I’m Melinda Wilde and I’ve been creating fine works on paper for over 30 years. In the last few years, I’ve gravitated to painting on canvas and found objects as well. What a delight to live here on beautiful Gabriola Island and be inspired every time I turn around. Everywhere I look is a possible painting!
People always ask me, “Have you always liked to paint?” The answer is “Yes!” and when I was in my 20’s my Dad and I began our watercolour journey together. Life, of course gets in the way of creating but I managed to stick to it and in spite of raising a blended family of 5 children, housing chickens, ducks, rabbits and dog, and a husband who worked away quite often when the kids were little, I scheduled time to paint. I think you have to want it enough and just go after it.
An important part of my creative process is to share with others what I have learned. I’ve been teaching watercolour classes to children and adults for many years and have spring and fall semesters for 10 weeks as well as one off seminars in the summer. Eighteen classes are available on line at the Skillshare platform. Also, within my amazing community I have done several public and private murals. You might see some on the electrical box at the ferry terminal, the power pole with the frogs on the ferry hill, the Agricultural Hall and the elementary school.
You can find Melinda in the Gabriola Visitor Guide, Our House Studio is D73 on the map!
